In 1938 Felice Benuzzi, a lawyer and an accomplished swimmer and mountaineer, went to Ethiopia as a Colonial Official in Italy's foreign service. By 1941 he was a prisoner of war. While interned in British POW Camp 354, Nanyuki, at the foot of Mount Kenya, Benuzzi and two fellow prisoners designed and built their own gear, broke out of the prison, climbed the 17,000 foot mountain and then returned to the camp.
