Pilot brings plane back after Kassel Mission 27 Sept 1944

Bad Hersfeld, Germany

Lt Bill Dewey was one of the few pilots to bring his B-24 back from the Kassel Mission battle, when the 445th Bomb Group faced the entire Luftwaffe. After a surprise attack when 100-150 fighters attacked the Liberator bombers, Dewey's plane limped back and landed at Manston England. Only five other planes out of 35 made it back to England.

Mission to Dessau

Tibenham, England

Lt. William R Dewey flies his first mission from the 445th BG base at Tibenham England to Dessau, Germany. Dewey's plane, the same one he would fly in the infamous Kassel Mission in September, was damaged and the flak was terrific. Dewey called it his "Baptism by Fire" in a 2004 interview with James Busha, published in "Flight Journal," Jun3 2009 issue.
