Navy Cross Citation
6 June 1944
CITATION:
"For extraordinary heroism as Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer attached to the SIXTEENTH Regimental Combat Team during the assault on the coast of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. With his assault boat twice driven off by the enemy while attempting to land with the second wave and half his gallant party killed or wounded, Lieutenant (then Lieutenant, Junior Grade,) Brandel quickly grasped the situation and, setting up his radio and establishing communication with a supporting cruiser, skillfully fired several highly effective missions at this critical juncture. Finding his forward observer seriously wounded immediately after gaining the shore, he coolly took over that duty in addition to his own and rapidly reorganized his unit. Although under intense enemy gunfire, he valiantly continued to call for and adjust his devastating supporting fire against hostile positions. His superb performance of duty and inspiring leadership aided materially in the advance of our forces in this vital area and reflected the highest credit upon Lieutenant Brandel and the United States Naval Service."
For The President,
James Forrestal
Secretary of The Navy
