A Story about Charles

| Salt Lake

I wish that I had a photo to post because this one of David and Grandfather touched a soft place in my heart! My memories are very fond of my grandparents. I keep one of these memories in a very special place in my heart. During the summer of 1978, I was living in Provo, working and taking a few classes. I tried to catch a ride to Salt Lake as often as I could. One Saturday afternoon, I was visiting Grandmother and Grandfather. After a few hours of visiting, I went to rest on the bed in their extra bedroom. I didn't fall sound asleep, and during one of those moments between sleep and awake, I heard the shuffle of feet and felt a blanket being laid over me. It was Grandfather taking care of his lazy, sleeping granddaughter. It was a cozy feeling and when I think of Grandfather, I feel his love like the comfort of the blanket.

Grandfather died at the age of 80 when I was nearing my seventh birthday. We had his 80th birthday party at our home in Sandy. From building boats with him in his basement to taking walks to East High School and sliding down the "E," I have many wonderful memories of grandfather. Many of my memories of grandfather and grandmother center around food: peanut butter on bread (with an extra layer of butter), bite-sized Snickers bars, dumpling soup, German chocolate cake, Safeway vanilla ice cream with every topping imaginable, Broch's candy, Product 19, Tab, apples with salt, and more.
