Again unloaded our baggage from the boat (which by the way has almost become a habit) and then loaded it once again on the train. Our destination this time was Norwich, a city of about 100 miles from London. Here, once again we unloaded our baggage from the train and onto a waiting "G.I." truck, this time heading for Attlebridge, the location of our permanent base, approx. 10 miles Northwest of Norwich. This was on May 25th and the next 3 days was spent in getting assigned to a squadron, etc... We also made 3 practice mission too.
On Sunday, May 28th., Our Pilot 2nd Lt. Zavorka told us that he was to go on his first Combat Mission with Lt. Komer and his crew, an experienced Crew with 13 missions to the Credit. This was the last I saw of Lt. Zavorka as theirs was the only ship in our squadron which failed to return. Rumor has it that it landed in Neutral Sweden as the target was close to the German-Swedish border, but no doubt it will take time to tell. Five of us enlisted men was at the recruitment when the planes returned from this Mission and I'll say, it was a pretty big dose to swallow when our pilot failed to return, but this was just one of our worries.
