Information taken from a picture of World War I veterans from Cherokee County, Iowa owned by Margaret and Grace Quirin of Marcus, Iowa: "John K. Hyndman - Son of Mrs. Elizabeth A. Hyndman. Born:May 19, 1893. Enlisted in Navy Dec. 12, 1917. At Great Lakes School until April 20, 1918, then assigned to transport duty as seaman 2nd class. Made 7 trips across without loss of a ship. Discharged Feb. 20, 1919."
