On Dec. 8th 1941Russell Emerson Clymer lived in Lower Frederick, Pennsylvania, when the United States declared war on Japan just one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor that killed 2,400 Americans. He enlisted in the Army on February 5, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during World War II. He was 19 years old.

Private Clymer was awarded the Silver Star for "gallantry in action". During an enemy air raid, Pvt. Clymer, a lineman, left his place of cover, deliberately exposing himself to a withering hail of shrapnel and fragments, and manned a machine-gun to help drive enemy aircraft away. Pvt. Clymer's unselfish act, at the cost of his life, exemplified the highest tradition of miltary service.
