Roger was first drafted into the Marine Corp Jan 1968. He trained at Camp Pendleton, California and was sent to Artillery School. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, 5th Infantry, He was sent to Da Nang, Hill 55. He also was sent to Cambodia. Serving 2 years there, he returned to Ohio in the late November 1970.

He reentered the military and decided this time to go into the Air Force. He trained in Champaign Ill and upon graduation, was sent to Langley Air Force base, Hampton, Virginia. He was a mechanic on KC 135. He then transferred to Tinker Air Force Base where he helped setup AWACs. Later he transferred to K.I. Sawyer AFB, Gwinn, Michigan and his job as Crew Chief on the KC 135 Air Refueling, and then later, 1980, returned to Tinker AFB. He became a flight engineer on AWACs and traveled the world, he was in several conflicts from the air. He mainly served in Saudi, he retired in around 1991.
