Forgotten Soldier

Duncan F. McLennan was born in 1835 in Telfair Virginia and was killed in Upperville VA in 6/9/1863. Throughout his childhood he was raised in Telfair County Virginia. He was educated in Telfair High school then later drafted when the civil war started. Then by age 26 his life changed as the civil war was taking place. Duncan Living in Virginia followed the confederates side leaded by Robert E. Lee. Duncan at age 26 in september 17, 1861 enrolled in the”E” Company Virginia 6th cavalry. Duncan paid a sixty dollar registration fee to the Virginia 6th cavalry and confirmed by J.F. Waring. Duncan was measured five foot eleven in his evaluation form. He registered with no medical cards and no personal information to bring to war. He was assigned to the “Company Mustur-in Roll” leaded by captain J.F. Waring in Richmond Virginia. He was assigned a twenty four dollar monthly payment for six months until further changes. He was enlisted on september 17, 1861 as a private. Duncan’s horse was evaluated then estimated for one hundred and twenty five dollars. He had also had his equipment evaluated and was worth thirty five dollars also insured twenty five dollars if it was destroyed. He obtained two weapons including a Colt Navy and Springfield Model. These weapons were provided by the virginia 6th cavalry and was insured twenty dollars for each weapon if damaged or destroyed. 1As the Peninsular Campaign started Duncan followed McClellan's Army that advanced from Washington D.C down to the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River to the peninsular south of the Confederate Capital of Richmond in 1861. Duncan was also awarded from Stonewall Jackson after this victory for leading his Company Mustur-in Roll. 2Once again the Union Army retreats to Washington. Duncan had also been serving for a year and already asosiated in battles with robert E Lee. Duncan also explained view on Robert E Lee how he was similar to his views in his letter to his friend. He also kept multiple copies of receipts with the Cavalry and explained how harsh the conditions were, “half a loaf of bread a day with water” there was very small amount of food for the confederates that was hard for them to fight well as they all were ill. Duncan had also stated that he did not agree with the confederates opinion on slavery but still fought for his home “Virginia”. Duncan was then sent to Fredericksburg Virginia to prepare for his next battle with the union. In December 1862 Confederates leaded by general Robert E Lee, confederates defeated union soldiers after 14 frontal assaults on well entrenched Rebels on Marye's Heights. This battle damaged Duncan's equipment then was insured less by only receiving fifteen dollars for his equipment but insured twenty five. The next battle Duncan was assigned to was Antietam leaded by general Robert E. Lee but the confederates were brutally stopped by union forces by McClellan and massacred confederate troops by killing twenty six thousand man that day. Duncan stated that his Colt Navy was stolen from him during the battle of Antietam and the Cavalry did not insure his twenty five dollars because no evidence. Surviving the battle Duncan follows Lee as he demanded to retreat. In Chancellorsville Duncan in May 1863 it was Duncan's last major battle and Victory as Robert E Lee Defeated general Hooker of the Union Army. There are no personal records on Duncan's Family life nor family associated with him to confirm family members. In 1863 at age 28 Duncan was assigned to a mission in Brandy Station in June 6th. There was a small battle between the union and confederates with nine total casualties but Duncan was shot,injured in the thigh. He sold his horse for one hundred and twenty dollars to receive quicker medical care listed in his letter. After two weeks and partially recovering he had a assignment on June 21st 1863. With wounds he was sent to fight in a battle in Upperville Virginia. He was shot killed in Battle in Upperville Virginia at age 28 by union soldier that is not identified on 6/21/1863.
