SSgt. John "Jack" Cunningham born in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His father, Vincent, was an editor of a newspaper in Atlanta, beginning in 1933.
He served as a gunner/armorer of B-24L (tail number 44-49607) that went missing on an air raid over Burma-Siam Railroad (Bridge 633) with a crew of 10. The aircraft, according to the MACR, developed carbuerator icing/loss of oil pressure; and was forced back.

Due to increasing altitude loss as pilot Lt .Margolies attempted to fly the return to base, the aircraft was ditched in the Bay of Bangladesh, Mouth of the Ganges RIver.

SSgt. Cunningham flew with the 9th Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Group, 10th Air Force out of Pandaveswar Army Air Base, West Bengal, India.
