LANDERS OF ALABAMA

Two of Luke and Rachel Landers's children, John and Dilley, with their families, had left Gwinnette County, Georgia in the late 1820's or early 1830's and received land grants in Benton County, Alabama near each other. They were among the first pioneers to settle in northeastern Alabama after the Treaty of Cussetta. Descendents still live on the original grants in areas near Jacksonville, Calhoun County, Alabama. John and Lucy lived in Georgia and in Caswell County, North Carolina. After Lucy's death, he moved to Benton County, Alabama. John was a leading Baptist minister. He had a much better education and possessed far more intelligence than the average Baptist minister of the day. John, his son Abraham Landers and grandson William Landers had land grants in what now (1998) is the New Liberty Community, Calhoun County, Alabama, and four miles from the David P. Roberts grant.

DIRECTIONS: (10 milesNorth West of Jacksonville) Landers Cemetery, Landers Road, Calhoun County, Alabama Quad Name: Colvin Gap, Latitude: 33.928N Longitude: -85.82W Leaving Jacksonville, (going North) on Hwy 21 or Pelham Rd., turn left (West) on Nisbet St. NW or (Hwy 204), then turn right (North) on Nisbet Lake Road (37). Continue North East and Landers Road will be on the left (West), just South of New Liberty Rd. (64)

DIRECTIONS: (South East of Gadsden) Leaving Gadsden, (going SouthEast) on Herman Nelson Hwy. 278 (74), continue East past Hokes Bluff, On the Right take Cameron Gap Road (South) to New Liberty Road, 64 and turn right, West toward New Liberty Community. A left turn, Landers Road runs South off of the New Liberty Road, Going South, where Landers Road bends or turns to the left (East), the Cemetery is on the right.

DIRECTIONS: (South of Hokes Bluff) From junction with US Hwy 431.US and Hwy 278, travel East 6.2 miles. At Hokes Bluff, turn Right (South) onto Colvin Gap Road, (County Rd. 23) Travel 0.9 miles South and pass Fords Valley Road, a three way stop intersection. Continue South on Colvin Gap Road travel 2.7 miles over Colvin Mountains. At 4-way stop Intersection with Websters Chapel Baptist Church, Turn left (East) on New Liberty Rd. (County Rd. 64) and travel 2.1 miles to Landers Road, turn right (South) on Landers road and travel 0.4 miles cemetery is on right.
