Following the trail of legal documentation Private Frederick Simmonds travelled from Sydney Australia on the 8th Nov 1916 and arrived at HMNB Devonport, Plymouth England on the 10th January 1917. He journeyed on to Folkestone Kent in the United Kingdom, arriving on the 13th March 1917. His battalion was given orders to proceed to France.

On the 17th of March 1917 Frederick and the 30th Battalion marched into base camp in Etaples France. The base camp was notoriously known for its intensive training. The men were subjected to bayonet drilling and gas warfare. They also endured long periods of marching at double-time across the dunes.

One week later, on the 24th of March the battalion marched out to their unit and on the same day “took on strength” in Etaples.

Frederick Simmonds was wounded on the field by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his foot on the 23rd of September 1917 and was later found negligent and was sentenced to 42 days of field punishment.

May 6th 1918 Frederick was admitted to hospital where he was diagnosed with Myalgia and due to this condition he arrived back in Australia on the 2nd of August 1918. He was discharged from the Australian imperial force on the 29th of August 1918.
