From the OREGONIAN, February 8, 1931:

James S. Church Came to Oregon in '77, Died Feb. 2
James S. Church, who died here February 2 was born in Afton, Wis., August 20, 1859. He came to Oregon when he was 18 years old and settled near Buena Vista for a few years. During this time he enlisted in the Indian war service. He married Margaret Elizabeth Smith in 1879. Five years later the family moved to Portland, and built their home at 1171 Minnesota avenue. Church street was named after him. He worked about 35 years at Portland Flouring Mills and the last four years he was employed by Multnomah county on the Broadway bridge. He was one of the founders of Patton Methodist church in 1890 and had been an active member since.
Surviving are six sons and daughters, Charles J. Church of Agate Beach, OR, Stephen A. and Oliver S. of this city, Wilmot F. of Yakima, WA, Ethel C. Kent of this city and Mildred Hurst of Long Beach, CA; 17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Other relatives include two sisters, Harriett McGuire of this city, Cora Watkins of Cathlamet, WA, and one brother, Oliver P. Church, of Ocean Lake, OR. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Wilson - Chambers parlors, with burial in Lone Fir cemetery.
