JOHN T. MACK, TROY PRINTER, DIES AT LEONARD HOSPITAL

First Trojan to Enlist in Army's Tank Service in World War; Was Ill Four Months

John T. Mack, who left his work as a printer in the composing room of The Observer to become the first Trojan to volunteer for enlistment in the Army's tank service during the World War, died this morning at the Leonard Hospital after an illness of four months.

Mr. Mack, at the time of his death, was a printer on The Times Record, going with that paper when The Troy Times was taken over by The Troy Record Co.

The recruiting station for tank service with the U. S. Army during the World War was established in the old City Hall and Mr. Mack was the first man on hand to volunteer.

Served Overseas.

At the end of the printer's last shift with The Observer until after the war, the staff gathered in the business office to bid him farewell and to give him a gift which was presented by the late Michael F. Collins, owner of The Observer.

After serving overseas 11 months as a corporal in Company C of the 331st Battalion Tank Corps, the Troy man was honorably discharged at Camp Meade, Md., April 10, 1919.

Mr. Mack was born in Troy, son of the late Ellen DeLee Mack and Thomas F. Mack. He had always resided here. He was a member of Typographical Union, No. 52, and of the Sacred Heart Church and its Holy Name Society.

Funeral Thursday.

Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Theresa Stallmer; two daughters, Joan M. and Theresa F. Mack; a son Thomas F. Mack; three sisters, Mrs. Edwin W. Stenard, Mrs. Anna Van Denburgh and Mrs. William Dandrew; two brothers, Andrew W. and Edward P. Burr, and an aunt, Mrs. Anna Shea, all of this city.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. from the residence, 20 Jesse Court, and at 9:30 a.m. from Sacred Heart Church, where a requiem mass will be sung. Military honors will be accorded the late veteran. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
