Bonnie was born in Schwertner, Texas, to the late Oscar and Melba White, the middle child in a household of eight children. She graduated from Bartlett High School in 1929, and in 1934 married the love of her life, Charles "Cookie" Cooke, also from Schwertner. Cookie was a U.S. Navy man, and served his country admirably during World War II. In 1942, Cookie and hundreds of other brave men perished when the USS Juneau sank at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Bonnie responded by enlisting in the WAVES and served the U.S. Navy and her country until 1946, achieving the rank of pharmacist mate first class.
