Stories

A most difficult message

Dad (Roland G. Lachance) told me, when on the U.S.S. Speed on 16 October 1941, he was on radio duty. That is when he transcribed a morse code message to tell Roland Lachance (himself!) that his father had passed away and was found dead ealier that morning.  It was an unexpected event in that his father Donat Lachance, age 49, was healthy and working as a foreman for Thom McAn Soe Comapny in Worcester, MA

Roland's immediate thought was to go to his mother and sister's sides but he could not do so as he was in the navy and his ship thousands of miles away in North Atlantic. He was forced to miss attending his father's wake, funeral and burial.  He felt very badly, as he told me, that he could not be with his family during this most difficult time.

Vessels Roland served on.

During WWII (05 October 1940 to 04 October 1945), he served on the USS Texas, USS Gannet, USS Sand Piper and USS Speed.

During the Korean War (09 July 1950 to 16 July 1951), he served on the USS Prairie AD15, HSS H. E. Hubbard DD748.
