Stories

Elmer Bruce Lloyd registered for the draft in Chippewa, Michigan and enlisted in the Navy 18 January 1918. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida for most of his career. He served on the battleship USS Idaho and on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, in addition to other ships. He was quickly promoted to Naval Chief; as an airplane mechanic, his full title was Aviation Chief Machinists Mate. He served in that capacity until 19 January 1948. His retirement was reluctant, the consequence of an injury sustained when he tripped and fell into a moving propellor blade while on duty.
