Battle of Buena VistaMX, 23 Feb 1847.

General Zachery Taylor's 500 American troops defeated Mexican troops under Santa Anna near Buena Vista MX.

From a Bartleson manuscript - As John was an officer, he was provided a horse to ride during the battles. Note: men were made officers due to their age, John was about 46 yrs old. He was gored by a lance during the battle. He was buried in a mass grave at the site.

He followed several of his sons into battle, to protect them. He was the only one in the family not to survive the war.

His sons Augustus C. Bartleson and Edwin Bartlesonalso served in the Mexican War. The story goes that they enlisted to gain title to the land the family was living on in Grand Chain IL
