"7/4/41 Here it is the 4th and I find myself in the Army which I never dreamed of or expected to come my way. So it shows one does not know what the future holds for me. Spent a exeptionally quiet 4th I have experienced for ages. Just rested, answered a few letters and paid a visit to one of my buddies in my barracks who is in the hospital. "40th Training Bm. Company A Camp Croft, South Carolina, 4/25/41. I am now beginning to experience real army life for in a few days I will be marching 20 miles a day or more with full pack on my back and a rifle over my shoulder. The temperature will be 110 degrees in the shade and no shade, with it pushing 130 degrees on the parole ground. Attention! Left face! Right face! At ease! Double time, March! Then on pay day I will get about $10.00. Some life, eh Boss! Stratton"
