The 14th Infantry Regiment was organized by order of President Abraham Lincoln on 3 May 1861 and it has fought at the forefront with distinction in every war since then, save one - World War I. At the end of the Civil War, General George Meade was asked where to place the 14th Infantry in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, D.C. His response was to place the unit in the position of honor to "The Right of the Line". This became the motto of the regiment.

When the United States declared war against Germany on 6 April 1917, the 14th Infantry Regiment was stationed at Yuma, Arizona busy patrolling our southern border with Mexico. The regiment was split, the First Battalion was on detached duty in Alaska while the remainder was sent to Vancouver Barracks in Washington for further training. Then, in 1918, the Regiment was sent to Butte, Montana to guard the Anaconda copper mines. By the time they were ready to go to Europe, the Armistice was signed and the War was over.
