Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Michael Vann Johnson Jr. graduated from the University of Central Arkansas.

After graduation, he joined the Navy and was assigned to Naval Medical Center, First Marine Division Detachment, San Diego California.

Later, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division for the duration of the Iraq War. He served as an MAP personnel (Medical Augmented Personnel).

In March 2003, he was deployed to Iraq. and assigned to Weapons Company in the CAAT Platoon. He traveled with his men in their Humvee and took care of them.

On 25 March 2003, he was killed by a rocket propelled grenade that entered his Humvee and detonated, while he was tending to a wounded soldier.

Psthumously promoted to HM2.

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Clinic was named, Johnson Hall, in his honor in September 2003.
