Jack grew up in Payne's Creek and Red Bluff, Tehama, CA. His grandfather had homesteaded on Mt. Lassen and his ancestry goes back to the Mayflower. He attended Lick Industrial School in San Francisco and Santa Rosa Community College in Sonoma County. In Santa Rosa he began taking flying lessons through an affiliation with the college and the Army Air Corps. He enlisted in the Navy at the beginning of WWII and began a career as a flight officer until his death in an air crash in 1960 in Turkey. Jack was married to Helen Young Bryant and had four daughters. They enjoyed 17 years of living in California, China, Guam, Washington, Virginia, and Rota, Spain.
