Entered the US Army in 1798.

Had command of the US Army transport fleet based in Detroit from 1802 to 1812. The fleet was responsible for transport of provisions, soldiers, and Indian Annuities for Fort Michilimackinac (Mackinaw), Fort Dearborn (Chicago), and lesser posts on Lakes Huron and Michigan. A round trip from Black Rock (Buffalo) to Fort Dearborn and back would take 2 months.

The mainstay of this fleet was the US Brig Adams, an armed transport of 150 tons burthen. In 1810 it is recorded as being armed with four cannons. The Adams was captured when General Hull surrendered Detroit on August 16, 1812; it was renamed the Detroit by the British, and armed with six 6-pounders. The Detroit was recaptured in October of the same year and burned.

Then Capt. Brevoort was captured by the British at Detroit, and was released on parole at Niagara in February of 1813. The US announced that he had been exchanged, but the British denied this. He served Commodore Perry during the Battle of Lake Erie as Officer of Marines aboard the US Brig Niagara. He was promoted to Major prior to being retired in 1817.

Later served as Collector of Customs for the port of Detroit, and then as Indian Agent at Green Bay.
