Harry Robert Bernard was born on December 12, 1918 to Leonard “Frank”and Maude Bernard who then lived in Wagontown, Pennsylvania. His family later moved to 344 W. Main St. in Coatesville. Harry was one of eight children: Grace, Florence, Frank III, Edith, Harry, Willis, Mildred, and Gladys. Harry’s father worked at Lukens Steel in Coatesville.

Harry graduated from the Coatesville Scott High School Class of 1936 (with Heroes Vernon Rubincam-Marines, John Grycky-Navy, and Herbert Hagamon-Army Air Corps).

After graduation, Harry worked in the Carpenter’s Shop at Lukens Steel. He played baseball in the Coatesville Suburban Twilight League for the Wagontown team.

Harry married Ida Davidson, and they had two children: Ronnie, and Dorothy Anne.

Harry was buried in a military cemetery on Iwo Jima. He was later returned for burial in his home country at Fairview Cemetery, on Oak St. in Coatesville on May 6, 1948 with full military honors.

His brother Willis served during the war.
