On October 6, 1944, 2nd Lt. Andrew Marshall was on a strafing mission over Greece when his North American P-51D Mustang was hit by enemy flak and he bailed out. He landed amongst Greeks who hid him from the Germans. A week later he met up with British forces who had moved into the area. He was returned to his base in Ramitelli, Italy on October 18th.

On December 29, 1944, Lt. Marshall was on a bomber escort mission to Landshut and Muehldorf, Germany, Marshall's plane was again hit by anti-aircraft gunfire.

"About five minutes from the target bubbles, blue flight was caught in the middle of a concentration of flak," said 1st Lt. Stanley L. Harris in a military report. "In the following evasive action, I became seperated from 1st Lt. Frederick D. Funderburg, Jr. and 2nd Lt. Andrew D. Marshall, who were the other two men in the flight with me. I joined up with nearest group of planes and I did not see them again. I heard radio transmissions from both of them later, and they were trying to join up with another squadron. They were not heard or seen after this."

Marshall's and Funderburg's names are included on the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Italy. Marshall was promoted to first lieutenant, and was awarded an Air Medal and Purple Heart, both with an oak leaf cluster. Both pilots were officially declared dead on December 30, 1945.
