TSgt Tull enlisted in Phladelphia on 31 July 1942. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic and an aerial gunner, completing the latter in March 1943 at Tyndall Air Field, Florida.

In August 1944, he was stationed at RAF Nuthampstead (AAF Station 131) Hertfordshire, England, serving as a gunner with the 603rd Bomabardment Squadron, 398th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. (His unit began their service there in 22 April 1944, concentrating their B-17G operations against Germany and over France).

On 15 October 1944, aboard B-17G (tail number 42-97746 T), while departing for a bombing mission # 98 over Cologne, Germany, all four engines failed and the plane crashed into "the top of the old moated medieval castle mound and exploded", near Anstey Church, Anstey, Hertfordshire, England.
