Steven Hair

Steven enlisted 6 January 1863 as a Private, Co. E, 63rd. Georgia Infantry, engaged Union forces in the battles of: Atlanta, Chickmauga, Vicksburg, Franklin Tn & Nashville, TN. Wounded in battle, recovery in Confederate hospital in Columbus, GA., discharged from Confederate Army & returned to Marion Co., GA. because of a disablilty.

 

63rd Regiment, Georgia Infantry

 

63rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Savannah, Georgia, in December, 1862, using the 13th Georgia Infantry Battalion as its nucleus. With more than 1,100 officers and men, the unit was assigned to the Departments of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It served as infantry and heavy artillery at Thunderbolt and Rosedew Island, and Companies B and K were engaged at Battery Wagner near Charleston. Later the regiment was placed in General Mercer's and J.A. Smith's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. Now serving as infantry, it participated in the Atlanta Campaign, July 20 to September 1, this unit reported 10 killed, 61 wounded, and 39 missing and in December, 1864, totalled 143 effectives. Very few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonel George A. Gordon, Lieutenant Colonel George R. Black, and Majors Joseph V.H. Allen and John R. Giles.

 

 

     Steve & Dicie moved to Texas in 1871, settling in San Augustine Co., Tx and in Nov. of 1872, their son S.R.A. Hair was born. Steven and Dicie moved to Erath Co. Tx near Dublin where Steven purchased land in Greens Creek Community.

   He bought a farm house which was in the family for over 100 years.

 

Will was located in Stephenville, Tx, at the Erath County Courthouse

 

     "Know all men by these present that I Stephen Hair of Erath County Texas of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testiment hereby revoking all other wills by me therefore and especially revoking a will executed by me on March 2nd 1910 and witnessed John Underwood and C.L. McCarty.

     First: I will and bequeath to each of my daughters, M. P. Timmons and Mrs. Ida Fletcher Hay the sum of one dollar and no mon.

     Second: I will and bequeath to my wife, William Alexander Hair, all the residue of my property of my description whatsoever, real, personal and mixed and investing in however a life estate only in such realestate as may die seized and possesed of, and I will and bequeath the fee simple to the same after the expiration of said life estate to any child or children which may be born to me and my said wife, William Alexander Hair, and in the event no such child or children are born us then I desire and direct at the expiration of the life estate in said land to my said wife as herein provided for, I will and bequeath the fee simple title to my son S.R.A. Hair intending by this instrument to will to my wife my personal estate and a life estate only in my lands with the remainder and fee simple title to vest in our heirs if we should have any and if not in S.R.A. Hair as herein directed

     Third: I nominate, constitute and appoint Virgil Sanders my sole executor without bond that upon the probate of the will I desire the cause be dropped from the docket.

     Witness this my hand April 19, 1910, in the presence of J.A. Johnson and J.C. George, who are called as witnesses here at my special instance and request.
