Stories

Battle of Chaffin's Farm

General Butler took the Confederates by surprise during the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. Prior to this attack, Lee was targeting the Confederacy from the left, but Butler decided to surprise the Confederacy by attacking from the right and center. Butler's technique gained a victory for the Union.

Butler Medal

The Butler Medal was originally created to reward meritous acts performed by African American soldiers at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm and New Market Heights. Even though African American soldiers were eligible to receive the Medal of Honor, Butler wanted to further recognize the men. He personally financed the creation of the medals. The reward was originally called the Colored Troops Medal.
