Civil War Service

Civil war       Colon Shaw Varnum enlisted in Capt Irwin's company on Aug 8, 1861, at Franklin, Alabama, as a Private for a period of 1 year. Colen was 23 years old. Irwin's Co. Became (2nd) Co E 25thReg't Ga Infantry. In May 1862 Colen was Transfered. (2nd) Co E became Co(2nd) I 38Reg't Ga. Infantry. On Sept 29, 1862 he was appointed 3rd Sgt of (2nd) I Co. and had 4 months 2 days pay due as Corp. Wounded Dec 13 at Fredericksburg, Va. Appears on Register of Medical Director's Office, Chimborazo Hospital No. 2, Dec 15 , 1862. In CSA Hospipal At Danville, Va Dec 23, 1862 and returned to duty Dec 28, 1862. (2nd) I Co. I 38th Reg't Ga. Infantry Was tranafered in March or April 1863 by order of Major General Early to the 60th Reg't Ga Infantry. It became (2nd) Co A, 60th Ga Infantry. On aroll Dated Jan 15,1864 Colen was listed as a 2nd Sgt.of (2nd) co A 60th Ga Inf. Co A, 60th Ga Infantry was transfered To the 61st Reg't Alabama Volunteers, by S. O. No. 84. A. & I. G. O. dated April 11 !864. It became Co K, 60th Alabama. Was listed as 1st Sgt of Co K, 60th Alabama on the June 30, 1864 roll. Wounded at Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865 and Captured, sent to Point Lookout, Va., arrived April 4, 1865. He was released June 21, 1865. He signed an oath of Allegiance at Point Lookout,Md on that date. It listed him as 1ST Sgt of the 61 Alabama Infantry Regt, also listed place of residence as Henry County, Alabama.His hair was Brown, eyes were blue, height 5ft 9 inches

Colon S Varnum 1st Sgt of the 61st, Al Inf Reg't Was wounded and captured At Petersburg, Va, April 2, 1865. He was released June 21, 1865, when he signed an oath of allegiance at Point Lookout, Md. The oath gave his Unit as the 61st Alabama and place of residence as Henry County , Al. They all enlisted at Franklin Alabama
