Ben was fighting at the Battle of Prairie Grove on December 7, 1862 when he was wounded in his right hip. The bullet was logded in his leg and was removed by a kindhearted Northern General who passed by the house were he was left. He was granted a furlough and was never able to return. He later moved to Brownwood, Texas were he became a farmer and lived for there for almost 60 years. He was a member of the Stonewall Jackson Camp an organization of Confederate Veterans of Brown County.
