Mr Vantyle, I send you these few lines to let you know that your son Demmon is dead. He died on Tuesday, the 8th, at 1 oclock and was taken from here today. He will be buried at the Soldiers Home on Long Island and in a few days I will have all particulars of where he is buried and will send them to you so that if you wish to have taken up you will have no trobel (trouble) in finding his body. I did all I could to have him sent home but I could not get permission to do it/send him.

I have no doubt but you will mourn over his death and so do I and many more of his companions for he was a good and faithful soldier. He has some money, about forty dollars as near as I can find out and there is two months pay due him now which will be paid at about the middle of this month and all this will be sent you.

In a short time, his death will be published in the Goshen paper. This is all I can tell you about at the present. This is from a friend, B (or P?) F Reed, Fort Schuyler, NY
