Note that the source of Sylvester P. Swan serving in the 48th WI Infantry is incorrect (the source was a typo in his GAR headstone record). He served with Co. G in the 49th WI Infantry and was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, KS before his discharge.

Sylvester was born 10 Feb 1812 at Berlin, Rensselaer, NY. He married Margaret Roberts at Stephentown, Rensselaer, NY on 8 Feb 1834. Their children were: George, James, Charles, Nelson, Jay, Irene, and possibly Eva and/or Minerva. Sylvester and Margaret moved their family from NY to Oakfield, Fon du Lac,Wisconsin about 1845. By 1860, Sylvester had a large farm in Dunn county, WI, near Rock Falls/Creek. On 10 Jan 1878, Sylvester died as a result of falling on a stove and catching his clothing on fire. It is presumed he suffered a stroke at the time of the fire. He is buried in Rock Falls cemetery along with his wife, Margaret, and son George.
