MILITARY FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE CONDUCTED TODAY FOR VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR

George Kidd, Last Surviving Soldier of War of '61 Residing In North Dansville Township, Answers Taps.

Dansville. -- Military funeral services for George Kidd, last surviving veteran of the Civil War residing in North Dansville township, will be conducted today by members of Daniel Goho Post No. 87, American Legion.

The Rev. Vaughn H. MacArthur will officiate at the service at the home on East HIll at two o'clock. Burial will be made in Greenmount cemetery where the commital service will be in charge of the American Legion, with color bearers, color guards, firing squad and bugler.

Mr. Kidd, who was 94 years of age, died Monday morning, following a paralytic stroke suffered about a week previous.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harry Kreiley and Mrs. Herbert Kiehle, of Sparta; three sons, David and Warren, at home, and Lester, of Conesus; one sister, Mrs. Rose Sahrle; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kidd, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Kidd, was of Dutch-English descent. He was born on the farm where he had since resided with the exception of the years he spent in service as a member of Company G, 58th Regiment of Infantry. One of the oldest readers of the Genesee Country Express, he came regularly to the office of this newspaper once each year to renew his subscription, and the visits with Mr. Kidd on these occasions were always looked forward to with pleasure. He was a kindly man, with a sense of humor, which gave him a balanced outlook on life and continued to keep him younger in spirit than his actual years. He enjoyed working about the farm and took particular pride in the gardens which he planted and cared for each season. Birthdays and family reunions arranged by members of his family were a source of joy to Mr. Kidd and he experienced much happiness from these gatherings.

Military Funeral Held For Civil War Veteran George Kidd

Taps were sounded yesterday for George Kidd, last Civil War Veteran in this area.

Mr. Kidd who was 94, died Monday morning at his farm home in Sparta where he had lived all of his life except for the term of his service with Company G, 58th regiment during the Civil War.

In tribute to the veteran who during recent years has seen the ranks of army with which he fought depleted, the American Legion stationed a guard of honor at his casket for one hour before the services which were held from the family home at two o'clock.

Many flowers banked the casket and a host of friends attended the rites. Rev. Vaughn MacArthur officiated.

Attending the services in a body were members of the Daniel Goho Post, American Legion. Also present were representatives of the County Legion, James J. Duffy, County Commander and Dennis Tormey, County Treasurer.

Bearers were Raymond Kiehle, Howard Kreiley, Clarence Shay, Stanley Osborne and Ward Hamsher.

At Greenmount cemetery, Nicholas Fries commanded a firing squad and Jacob Freas? of the American Legion Bugle and Drum Corps sounded taps.
