SHOWN AS Parolee (named as 'Goole') on passenger list of US transport steamer General Lyon which burned and sank March 31/April 1 1865 with only 29 survivors of approx. 550 on board – see NY Times April 14, 1865 and April 3, 1865. George Gould was one of the survivors. However he was not a parolee at all and had never been captured.

In October 1864 he was detailed to Company D 144NY, Permanent Party, Hart Island. He escorted recruits to the frontlines held by his regiment in Virginia from the troop staging area on Hart Island. On one such trip George jumped off the burning USS (sic) General Lyons (sic) … George was rescued after several house in the water
