With the 63rd NY, Irish Brigade @ Antietam and wounded in the foot and discharged. Later filed for Pension.

Re-enlisted in July 1863 after Gettysburg and then wounded July 1864 @ the siege of Petersburg resulting in the loss of his right arm. Served with the 12 Mass. Inf. Regt., and then with the 39th Mass. Inf. Regt. Filed for a Pension.

Returned to Boston & married and riased 6 sons. One died there and family of wife and 5 sons emigrated to Nebraska in 1880.

Served in the Nebraska Legislature and then Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard 1895-1901

Member of the National Board of the Soldiers and Sailors Homes 1911-1913 with oversight of Hot Springs, SD home.

Governor of the Pacific Branch of the S&S Home in Sawtelle, CA (Sawtelle or Santa Monica, or now Los Angeles, CA 1913-1920.

Buried at the VA's National Cemetery there with his son James, his wife, and adopted dau. Marie.
