According to Hobson's Vietnam Air Losses F-4D tail number 66-7528, crewed by LtCol C. D. Smith and 1Lt F. M. Driscoll, was hit by 14.5mm AAA fire while attacking a truck park in Laos about 30 miles west of the DMZ. The crew nursed their aircraft back to Ubon RTAFB but crashed on landing. LtCol Smith survived with severe injuries; 1stLt Driscoll died in the crash.


	It is a rare occasion when I get out my old SEA pictures, but one snapshot that always makes me pause shows Fran and myself and an Indian merchant named 'Charlie' in front of Charlie's shop. A week later, Fran ejected and his parachute did not open. I remember the sad ride in the back of an old C-47 from Ubon to Korat; our Squadron C/O sent me along as an escort on the first leg of Fran's trip home. We lost a great guy.
