The 1850 census for Monroe Township, Adams County, Indiana, shows John A. living with his parents Samuel and Yada A. Sackett. John is shown as age six and born in Indiana.

John A Sackett enlisted in Company H, 89th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

The certificate for Company H, 89th Infantry, held by the Historical Society in Decatur, shows that John died "from effects of wounds received in battle of Nashville, December, '64." The diary of a member of Company H indicates that John was wounded December 16 in the battle of Nashville and died of his wounds on January 7, 1865. The records of the Nashville National Cemetery list him as John A. Sackell and show that he was buried in Section H, Site 9604.

John was five feet 7 1/4 inches tall, dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
