The 1860 census for Washington Township, Adams County, Indiana, lists Zeph B. Odle, age 42, a farmer with a real estate value of $200 and a personal estate of $200. Zeph is listed with his six living children. His wife, having died the previous year, was not listed. The census shows him living adjacent to his brother-in-law, Perry P. Andrews. His daughter Hester Ann Odle married James Wesley Smith, son of John H. and Layah Smith, on 20 July 1866.

Zepheniah served in Company H, 89th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He died of Smallpox during the Civil War. According to the certificate of Company H, he died at Memphis. He and Mary Andrews had three sons who also died during the Civil War - Nathan, who died 26 February 1854 at Nashville, Davidson County, TN, and is buried at the Shiloh National Military Park; Perry, who died in 1865 in Tennessee; and Caleb, who died in 1864 in Tennessee.

The records of the Memphis National Cemetery show that Zephaniah Odele was buried in Section C, Site 2576.
