John H. Moore married Clara Ann Whitlock about 1865, supposedly at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois.

Extract from Clara's obituary: Clara Ann Philo was born in Quincy, Illinois in 1849. She spent her early years there. When the Civil War broke out her father enlisted as a fifer and was stationed at Camp Douglas. She was with her father at that place for three years, and was married there to Major John A. Moore. When Major Moore was discharged from the army the couple moved to Minneapolis, then came to Wright County, locating in Corinna township. Major Moore died five years after moving to Minnesota.

Later Mrs. Moore married Edward Philo and they lived in Corinna township until 1907 when they moved to St. Cloud. (Annandale Advocate, Annandale, Minnesota, Thursday, July 3, 1947, page 1.)

His middle initial may have been a typographical error. Whether he achieved the rank of major is open to question.
