"I met Larry Eugene Washburn 2 days before the accident. I had the same mission but we had to abort 20 min out due to as issue with cargo that had a fuel leak. A second C-130 took the mission and that is the flight he was on that exploded 20 min out,
I did everything I could to stop that flight and failed.
Larry Eugene was a polite easy going airman. He hadn't got to work on the flight line and was interested. Flight line is more exciting than the shops. We spent 2 days working on my plane together. I let him set in co-pilot's seat and took him thru an engine run. He loved it. I enjoyed his company. He had a E-5 Sgt. with him and they may have worked together in a shop. They asked for a hop and so I got them on the manifest. They were rotating back to the world.
I am proud to have met this fine young man.
I have been uneasy about what happened to him and now we know. I learned about a year ago that the plane crashed but he wasn't listed and now I see that he is. There were some other people on board who I had flown with in past but Larry Eugene touched my heart. We were same age with similar interests. We have a great loss with these men and I will remember."
