Silver Star Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War SYNOPSIS: Specialist Fourth Class Robert E. Barnes (ASN: RA-16915925), United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving with Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 14 February 1968. I so remember the good times. We were tight. I remember when we got hit, during tet. you turned down the Silver Star, The Army awarded you. You wouldn't take it. That is who you are. I remember you telling me you were there, to take your brother's place. Your brother was a medic in Nam, who had lost his life. Your mom & dad wrote me a letter & wanted to know exactly what happened? I can't imagine their grief. I still have the letter. You were sure getting plenty of letters, from the sisters, or twins. Wow, gorgeous they were. I've got your picture hanging on my wall. You had 38. I had the 45. We had good times together. I'll see you soon, Bob. God Bless You, You are my hero. Thank you, Brother. Patrick McAleavey, Comrade 'Doc' Barnes 'Doc' was our platoon medic, but he was also my friend. We were the same age, 19, but he always seemed wiser. I think he had an old soul. 'Doc' took care of me when I was wounded. On my back on the ground, I looked up at his face and I knew I would be OK. 'Doc' made sure I got home.
