Co. H of the Sixth Regiment, Illinois National Guard, stationed at Monmouth, was quick to respond to President McKinley's call for volunteers at the breaking out of the Spanish- American war in April, 1898. Orders came to the company April 25 to proceed to Springfield, and by noon of the 27th twelve officers and ninety-one men of the company, under command of Captain W. W. Shields, were in camp at the state capital.
