Tompkins led his company of approx. 50 men on a scouting mission on the night of May 30th, 1861 to inspect the Fairfax Court House. They left camp after 10pm, and approached the town at 3am. They were able to surprise and capture the Confederates before entering the town.

However, Tompkins did not realize that Fairfax was home to three Conferderate companies. A charge initially called the attention of ready riflemen from town, with the Union cavalrymen passing completely through (the town) before turning. The other two companies arrived as they passed back, and a brief skirmish took place. Outnumbered, Tompkins made the decision to retreat, and was able to outrun his pursuers. Two horses were reportedly shot from under Tompkins and he injured his foot when the second one fell on him.

Tompkins gained fame from this raid and on Nov. 13, 1893 was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor.
