Note: When researching Shadrach Roberts, various spellings of Shadrach had to be considered. The various spellings found of the first name were: Shadrach, Shadrack, Shadrick, Shedwrack, Shedrick, Shederick and Shaderick. Nick name spellings were Chad and Shade.

IMMEDIATE FAMILY

SHADRACH ROBERTS, the son of RICHARD ROBERTS and ELIZABETH LYNDEN MONTGOMERY, was born about 1754 in Granville County, North Carolina, and died about Feb 1805, in Keg Creek, Columbia County, Georgia.
He married (1) UNKNOWN.
He married (2) DELILA "DILLY" LANDERS about 1795, (in probably) Richmond County, Georgia, the daughter of LUKE LANDERS and RACHEL PARRISH. She was born July 31, 1769 in Granville County, North Carolina, and died October 30, 1849 in Benton (Calhoun) County, Alabama.

"After grandfather's (Joseph Cartledge) death (Jan 1795), my grandmother (Dilley Landers Page Cartledge) was twice married, first to a Mr. [Shadrach] Roberts, and afterwards to a Mr. [Jonathan] Swann. She was married four times, raised a family by each of her husbands, buried all four of them in succession, and then lived a widow for the last twenty years of her life. She died in Benton County, Alabama, in 1851 in the ninety-third years of her life. Of all persons whom I have personally known, my grandmother Cartledge was gifted with the most entertaining conversational powers. She could make her conversation interesting and attractive to young and old alike, to the learned and the unlearned. She had a much better education than most women of her time, her father, LUKE LANDERS, a successful teacher, having given his children an unusually good education for that day and time."

At age 34, David married his step - sister, ELIZABETH PAGE SPAULDING, age 30, on February 06, 1818 in Columbia County, Georgia, daughter of BENJAMIN PAGE and DELILA LANDERS. She was born May 19, 1788 in Columbia County, Georgia, and died March 05, 1872 in Calhoun (Benton) County, Alabama. ELIZABETH PAGE was a widow of her first husband, the son of HENRY SPAULDING. DAVID P ROBERTS and ELIZABETH PAGE had six children.

NOTE!

DELILA "DILLY" LANDERS was a Stepmother and a Mother - In - Law to DAVID P. ROBERTS.

THE UNKNOWN WIFE OF SHADRACH ROBERTS IS NOT JUDAH

(99% SURE OF THIS FACT)

JUDAH (of Columbia County, Georgia) was born July 31, 1769, and died October 30, 1849. She married JOHN ROBERTS, (probable son of JOSEPH ROBERTS and FAITHY). He was born Abt. 1771 in North Carolina, and died 1821 in Columbia County, Georgia. They had a son named DAVID ROBERTS. The widow JUDAH and her son DAVID both appear on Tax Listing in Columbia County, Georgia.

I believe the name Judah came from the following source:

She married (2) REVEREND PHILIP SIEBER JUNIOR on December 30, 1813 in Clinton, Anderson County, Tennessee, the son of PHILIP SIEBER and MARIA CATHERINE HIMMELBURG. He was born October 06, 1794 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, and died November 29, 1838 in Benton County, Alabama. They had five children.

They had eight children. Burial: Sandy Cemetery, Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.

1771 Free Persons of Color -Granville County, 1771 Petition

The following is a list of people who signed a Petition in 1771 to repeal an act passed by the North Carolina Assembly making all free Negroes and Mulatto women and all wives of free Negroes and Mulattoes declared Tythables. These people were more than likely Free Colored Persons, or married to a free colored person. This list might be helpful to some who are trying to locate the whereabouts of their ancestors in 1771. By the way, the Petition was rejected by the Assembly.

1790: Columbia County, Georgia

Columbia County, Georgia didn't exist until 1790, when it was created from Richmond County
Columbia County is situated to the north and west of Augusta, Georgia. The 1820 U.S. census reports Columbia County as being "41 miles long on the stage road by 30 wide…great part by actual measurement." Columbia County was formed from Richmond County in 1790. The eastern edge of the county is bordered by the Savannah River which acts to separate Georgia from South Carolina. Columbia County ran to the west, at least , as faras Thomson, Georgia. However, the 1870 State legislature narrowed Columbia County by making the town of Thomson the county seat for a new McDuffie County. To the south of Columbia County is Richmond County, SC and to the north Lincoln County, NC.

Abt. January 1795, Joseph Cartledge Junior, (Dilly Landers's 2nd husband) passes away in Columbia County, Georgia.

Description: The Bartram Trail was named for William Bartram. He was America's first native born naturalist/artist and the first author in the modern genre of writers who portrayed nature through personal experience as well as scientific observation. His travels from Augusta, beginning in May 1775, took him north to Fort James on the Petersburg Road paralleling the Savannah River, but about three or four miles away from its banks. On this he passed through Columbia and Lincoln Counties in areas now covered, at least in part, by J. Strom Thurmond Lake.
