Charlotte Whitcomb tells of Thomas Whitcomb and his wife in the early
days of northern Maine in her 1904 History of the Whitcomb Family in America:

Thomas Whitcomb, 5 (Nathaniel, 4 Jonathan, 3 Jonathan, 2 John,1) was married November 29, 1759, to Anne Whitney of Stow [Massachusetts];she was a woman, it is said, possessed of remarkable courage and perseverance. When they first went to Norridgewock, Maine it was farin the wilderness, and consequently no physician within a long distance. She played the role of doctress for the country round about, and many are the stories, now extant, of her plunging her horse into the Kennebec River in the night time, and swimming the river on horseback to visit patients in critical cases. They moved first from Massachusetts to Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, where he enlisted as a Revolutionary solder and was taken prisoner by Indians at “TheCedars.” He served at Ticonderoga afterwards and was discharged December, 1776. When he was released he went to Norridgewock, Maine. He was a taxpayer in that town from 1780 to 1788. He died June 21, 1824. His wife died June 1, 1823.

Thomas Whitcomb (1736-1824) was pensioned for service as private in Capt. Jacob Hind's company, Colonel Bedel's New Hampshire regiment. He was born in Littleton, Mass.; died in Norridgewock, Maine.

Thomas Whitcomb, Norridgewock ; born in 1736 ; was in the New Hampshire line one year ; was taken prisoner by the Indians at the Cedars ; died June 21, 1824, aged eighty-eight.

….Thomas Whitcomb born in Littleton, Massachusetts, and married there on 29 November 1759 to Anne Whitney of Stow, came to Maine during the Revolution. They moved first to Deerfield, New Hampshire, where Thomas enlisted as a Revolutionary soldier. Discharged in December 1776 after service at Ticonderoga, Thomas Whitcomb came to the Kennebec, where he became a taxpayer at Norridgewock in 1780. His wife, known as "Old Granny Whitcomb" served as traveling doctor and midwife for the region until Zebulon Gilman arrived in 1785.
