James Wheelock married, June 28, 1774 at Swanzey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, Lois Starkey (b. 1755) by whom he had at least 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters): James, Cynthia (1778-1830), Lois (1790-1830) and 2 names not known.

On July 16, 1780, James engaged as a Private in Captain Nehemiah Houghton's Company of Militia in Colonel Moses Nichols's Regiment raised by the State of New Hampshire and joined the Continental Army at West Point. He was paid 73 miles travel to Springfield, Hampshire (now Hampden) County, Massachusetts and 220 miles travel home. He was discharged from this engagement on October 21, 1780 after serving 3 months and 6 days. During the war, the Town of Swanzey paid James 21 Pounds, 13 Shillings and 4 Pence for his military service.

In 1790, at the taking of the US Census in Swanzey, James was enumerated as the head of a family with 1 male of 16 years and upwards, 2 males under 16 years, and 4 females. In the 1800 US Census of Swanzey, he was enumerated as the head of a family with 1 male and 1 female of the age of 45 and over, and 1 female of the age of 10 thru 15 years. In the 1810 US Census of Swanzey, he was enumerated as the head of a family with 1 male of the age of 45 and over and 1 female of the age of 16 thru 25 years of age.
