William Coram (1756-1821) served over six (6) years of the American Revolutionary War as a member of the elite Commander-in-Chief's Guard, the personal bodyguard detail for General George Washington.  He mustered out of the Continental Army at the end of the war in 1783 and moved to Georgia, where he married Ann Hodo.  They had one child, Thomas Coram, who moved to Benevolence, Randolph County, in 1823.  In a couple of Commander-in-Chief's Guard muster rolls, William Coram's name was misspelled "Corum".
