Lt. McCrumby was credited with at least one enemy aircraft damaged in aerial combat. On January 27th, 1944, his aircraft was damaged in a scrap with enemy fighters. On February 5th, he was shot down and bailed out, getting injured in the process. On February 29th, 1944, a few minutes after leaving base (Capodichino Airfield, Italy) on a mission to the Gaeta, Italy area, he turned back toward base and was never seen again. He was presumed dead having crashed into the Mediterranean Sea and never recovered. He was officially declared dead July 15, 1945.
