Service in the Spanish American War

Charles lied about his age so he could enlist in the Navy and serve in the Spanish American War.  Unfortunately, he developed appendicitis and was given a medical discharge.  He was on the SS Brooklyn and was on the ship during the Battle of Santiago.  He lived to be one of the last veterans of the Spanish American War, passing away the day before his 100th birthday.
