Merle Bonnes Obit

Lansing--Merle Bonnes, age 84, of Lansing, Minn., died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at Austin Medical Center.
He was born October 5, 1922, to John and Cornelia (DenHartog) Bonnes in Ocheydan, Iowa.
Merle grew up in the Hollandale and Lansing area. He married Arlene G. Braastad on Jan. 24, 1942, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. After serving in the US Army during World War II, Merle and Arlene moved to Bristol Center, Minn., where Merle worked in a garage partnership with his brother, Andrew for 14 years. They moved to Rock Dell, Minn., and a year later, in 1957, to Lansing, where Merle opened a garage. After operating the garage for 14 years, he worked for the city of Austin as a mechanic until 1985 when he retired.
He loved to fish, camp, and invent things. He enjoyed building and repairing all sorts of things. Merle loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of Lansing, Minn.; one daughter, Norma (Nathan) Naatz, of Austin; two sons, Wayne (Sandy) Bonnes of Austin, and Terry (Connie) Bonnes, of Rochester, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Cornelia (Mervin) Felty, of Brownsdale, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Muryne Bonnes, of Austin, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Engel; four brothers, John, Henry, Andrew and Maynard; and one great-grandchild, Joshua.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, rural Austin, with The Reverend Bruce Falksen officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment is at Red Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post 91. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
